Education, Assessment, and Training

This certified professional has completed the following beyond a Bachelor's Degree:

 

57-60 credit hours of graduate study in Speech Language Pathology

​

400 Clock Hours including diagnostics and therapy to service adult and pediatric clients

​

Pass the National Board Examination for Speech Language Pathologist's

 

Complete the required Clinical Fellowship under the supervision of a Speech Language Pathologist with their Certificate of Clinical Competence; this is a minimum of 9 months worked, totaling no less than 1,260 hours

 

Once the above qualifications are met the Certificate of Clinical Competence is awarded.*

These professionals complete additional education to learn research or information in the field and maintain licensure and CCC'S.

Beyond University This can include years of service in a variety of settings include public and private schools, hospitals, home health, clinics, and skilled nursing facilities.  SLP's are trained over the course of graduate school in all areas of service and ages but they can focus on pediatrics or adults, they can maintain skills in both areas, and/or specialize in specific areas such as feeding and swallowing or cognition.

* States can have different licensing requirements and some provide certifications to provide speech therapy services in different settings pending qualifications.  There are other provisional/general requirements that some states have adopted.

What is a C-Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant?

A Speech-Language Pathologist-Assistant is a professional who has 4 years of training to earn a Bachelor's Degree in the study speech-language and audiology.  This is the first 4 years of a Master's Degree in either of those programs.  These professionals service clients under the direction of a licensed CCC-SLP.  They are licensed by the state where they provide therapy services.*  The professionals continue their education and training through approved course work to maintain their license to practice.
